Steel vs Wood Shelters

Rolling Hill  manufactures 100% steel shelters like no other company in the United States.  Strong, Solid, Tough, Durable, Resilient and Heavy-Duty!   To back this up I’m offering a 100% forty year warranty with no rust through or weld breaks under any condition with the steel frame.  And the company we purchase our steel roof and siding from offers a 40 year limited color warranty.  In order to do this I have certified welders and use superior USA steel, just like the steel bridges you see in rural US country sides.  Rust will occur on the surface but there’s no rust through steel frame.

Our shelters are built to last with quality USA steel features like 6-gauge sliding skids, custom gates, hinges and latches built to last in position no matter how many times you move/slide your shelter for cleaning or relocation. Inside walls are welded with 1 ¼” steel pipe lined 3” center spacing giving longevity and safety for your livestock.  Our prefabricated steel shelters are manufactured in the USA delivered completely assembled.

With so many rancher preferences, we can design, engineer, and manufacture the perfect cattle/horse shelter for your livestock needs.  We offer quick turnaround, typically the quickest in the business!  With wet, windy winter/spring days it’s important your livestock is able to get in from these type of conditions for their health reasons.  In the summer months with temperatures reaching 90 to 100 degree the shelter provides great shade from heat stress.  Click study here: Iowa State on Heat Stress

STEEL verse WOOD SHELTERS:

  1. Longevity steel shelters last 40 to 50 years vs. wood 8 to 12 years

  2. Rolling Hill’s 40 year warranty with steel frame and welds vs. wood and nails/screws

  3. Steel roof and siding has 40 year color warranty vs no warranty on wood

  4. Mobility to move over a 100 times without being frozen to ground vs moving once or twice before moving out of square, loosening up the walls etc.

  5. Steel shelter is always square with no leaning or separation of welds vs wood that can separate from nails and screws while moving

  6. Heavy duty strong gates mounted on steel vertical studs  vs gates that lag to wood post

  7. We can make steel pens and alleys inside the shelters vs wood that you can’t do such

  8. Steel studs are impervious to fire, termites, warps, rot, splitting, and any other number of hazards which can affect any kind of organic-based building material--namely, pine wood.

  9. Steel shelter is twice the weight vs pine wood; important in high winds vs wood is lighter and will tear under high winds

  10. Steel more durable - 11 and 14 ga New Carbon Steel studs and truss vs pine wood studs and truss!

What causes rotten wood? ….. it is actually fairly simple – lingering moisture in wood creates an                        environment conducive to fungi growth,  which in turn causes the wood’s fibers to deteriorate..    So,                when water contacts an unprotected wood surface for a long enough period of  time the wood                            begins to rot. So wood runners/skids are always on the ground drawing moisture.

   11.  RESALE VALUE 80% GREATER vs WOOD SHELTERS

Steel shelter price points are a little more expensive but you have a shelter for life time.

We also have a number of options:

  1. Heavy industrial gates / calf gate / head gates / horse back-latches / slam latches / double gate latches

  2. Tack or feed/mineral rooms / glass windows / wind break side extension sides / sliding doors / canvas door

  3. 20 colors to mix or match your steel siding/roof  with a 40 year warranty

  4. Steel entry side doors or sliding doors

  5. Two or Three Outside Shelter steel guard rail around shelter.  Tie up club calves/horse or just protect outside steel siding

  6. Wood lining/ substitute steel lining / insulation

  7. Lights inside/outside / Electricity powered by solar

  8. Camera system to monitor livestock– (smart phone set-up 24/7)

  9. Black Tarp can be placed on the front gates to keep out the cold wind

Another important feature with our shelters is adding a number of options at a later date.

Our 10 ft. and 12 ft. wide shelters are the most common.   Lengths are 30 ft. to 40 ft. long.  Consider even removable gates or a nice corral in front of the shelter to work your livestock.
